Junk mail Opt-out Guide

This is a collection of opt-out and unsubscribe steps I have followed to stop most of the junk mail from being delivered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to the mailbox at our home.

FIRST Major Step in limiting unwanted junk mail pieces to your house:

Opt-out at the DMA’s “DMA Choice” website. While it is certainly questionable that you have to create an account and pay them $2 dollars to the stop unwanted or unsolicited mail, it does filter out a lot of mail. There is a separate, free, mail-in form option here.

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA), now merged with the AMA is a trade organization for marketers which seeks to advance and protect responsible data-driven marketing. They also sell data and corporate memberships. Though the DMA is a stakeholder in the U.S. Postal Service’s Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) program, they do not currently have a method in place for anyone to opt-out / unsubscribe (though they stress the importance of “honoring a consumer’s request to be removed” from lists).

As a back-up, you’ll want to complete this form as well: https://directmail.com/mail_preference/

DirectMail.com is a marketing agency that started their own Do Not Mail engine. They are a DMA member. I haven’t determined how this list differs from the DMA’s list.

SECOND Major Step in reducing unsolicited junk mail pieces to your house:

Opt-out at the Consumer Credit Reporting Industry’s page to stop credit and insurance offers.

This will stop Equifax, Experian, Innovis, and TransUnion, (collectively the “Consumer Credit Reporting Companies”) from selling your data to credit card and insurance companies who barrage mailboxes with offers.

Internet Domain Name Service (IDNS)

Disregard all mail you get from this “company” about any web domains you own. It is impossible to unsubscribe from these mailings. I have tried politely but they aren’t making any notes. One route I have pursued is contacting the companies that host their websites and informing that they are enabling these people and their junk spam mail scam scheme.

IDNS operates under these names: “Domain Registry”, idnsinc.com, or giv.com
